The Black Books

The original drawings were done in little Daler sketchbooks, usually in pencil. The images were then worked on in Rapidograph in little black books. They are mostly recordings of moments, often of waiting, describing different aspects of what was going on around. They often included words from overheard conversations as well as fragments of what was observable. Many of these go back a lot of years and include a kind of diary of a school trip to the Cairngorms when I taught art in a comprehensive in south east London. Others would be local scenes or sitting in cafes on day trips out. You can see here my interest in the not necessarily big moments in life. Even one of Michael Gambon’s dog Oliver when we used to live next door to him a long time ago, his wife calling out.
