This section contains work from starting at art college and in some of the following years. Observation drawing was important and included my surroundings, bedsit, the people around, holiday landscapes and an introduction to life drawing. At that time (late 60’s, 70’s) life drawing was considered essential in an art school course. This does not seem to be the case now which is a great shame. Possibly this has been replaced by life-drawing sessions on Zoom. Similarly, sketchbooks have been augmented by being able to draw in apps such as Procreate on an iPad.
Some of my influences might be identified, Hockney, Sutherland, Bacon as well as Tom Phillips who was a visiting tutor.
Motifs that still continue are also here: gates, stripy fields, multi-centred landscape structures, walls and barns.
The work here is largely from sketchbooks.
